University of Redlands

Cosmorphology Class 2009 & 2012

In 2009 and 2012, our co-founder Monica Aiello was a Lossett Visiting Professor at the University of Redlands in Southern California. There she taught a course fusing art and geology called Cosmorphology with collaborator and NASA scientist, Dr. Julie Rathbun. Rathbun, an associate professor of physics, is also a leading planetary science researcher and has advised Monica on her work for years. The two developed a transdiciplinary curriculum which united scientific and artistic practice. The course was offered for undergraduate students who engaged in a month-long intensive May-term course. Students immersed themselves in the study of both art and planetary geology through studio sessions, science labs, discussions, presentations and critiques. The course blended deep scientific investigation with art theory and practice with the co-instructors working hands-on in both the lab and studio. The course included field trips to museums and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and culminated with a campus exhibition.
