We've been so honored to conduct a series of PD workshops with the wonderful staff of Swigert Elementary uniting STEAM and IB practice.

In 2016, we were delighted to work with the amazing staff of Swigert International School - a visionary International Baccalaureate elementary school. Dedicated to developing intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalizing world, IB is a great pairing with STEAM! Working with staff across grades, our first workshop looked at our home planet from the vantage point of space. Teachers became artist explorers, using visual concepts and NASA images to illuminate topics in hydrology, geography, resources, migration and mapping. Grade level teams envisioned dynamic ways to fuse STEAM and IB practice for deeper discovery.

Energy Systems Mobiles PD

4th grade teachers embarked upon an exciting mini-PD to augment their in-depth unit on energy. Teachers analyzed global energy production and consumption data. They decided to focus on Germany and created an awesome mobile to visually represent their findings. Each section or their mobile represents a "slice" of their pie chart  - featuring a energy sector symbol and beads to represent percentages. Attaching non-renewables to one side of their mobile and renewables on the other (with nuclear in the middle), the 4th grade team quickly saw the nuances of energy patterns in Germany in tactile ways. During implementation, students will each pick their own country and make mobiles to support the team's deep dive into energy, economics, statistics, systems and balance from a planetary perspective.
